Best solar trickle chargers for car, RV and boat batteries

A small solar panel can keep a parked vehicle's battery topped up where there is no outlet. Here is what to look for and how popular models compare on their makers' own specs.

We have not tested these products. This roundup compares manufacturers' published specs and prices checked on Nov 1, 2026. Prices change often.

Why batteries go flat in storage

Every battery slowly loses charge on its own (self-discharge). Many vehicles also have small "parasitic" loads, like clocks, alarms and computer modules, that draw power even when switched off. Battery University notes that lead-acid batteries should be kept charged in storage, because a lead-acid battery left discharged can sulfate and lose capacity. A solar trickle charger replaces some of that lost energy each sunny day.

Battery Tender's own 1.25 A plug-in charger page warns that a basic trickle charger delivering constant current can overcharge a battery over weeks. That is why a controller (or a smart plug-in maintainer) matters. Compare the two types in maintainers vs trickle chargers.
